What You Should Know About H. Pylori Symptoms

H. pylori symptoms are not directly from the bacteria itself, but rather the medical conditions that it causes. H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) is a bacteria found inside the stomach that wears down the stomach’s protective coating. Ulcers are primarily the result of an H. pylori infection, and it can also cause gastritis. If left untreated, the H. pylori infection could develop into stomach cancer over time. People suffering from a condition related to H. pylori may experience:

• Pain in the abdomen
• Indigestion (Dyspepsia)
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Vomiting

On the contrary, many people may be a carrier of H. pylori and never feel any of these symptoms. It is possible that a person may be infected and never even be aware of the infection. It is estimated that up to fifty percent of the entire world’s population is infected with H. pylori. The bacteria is spread from person-to-person contact (such as kissing), in addition to tainted food and water. People living in underdeveloped regions with unsanitary conditions, along with areas with a dense population, are more prone to contracting the bacteria.

What H. pylori does

H. pylori causes an infection in the stomach. When this occurs, the infection wears down the protective lining of the stomach made up of mucus. A result of this erosion and inflammation can be gastritis, peptic ulcers, or duodenal ulcers. H. pylori has also been linked to cancers such as gastric and pancreatic, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.

Signs of a serious infection

• Sharp pains in the abdomen region (a few inches above the belly button)
• Blood showing up in stools or vomit
• A loss of appetite
• Unintended weight loss

Treatment

People suffering from an infection due to H. pylori can be treated. Medicines that can be used for treatment include antibiotics, Histamine (H-2) blockers, and proton-pump inhibitors. The typical prescription will be a combination of antibiotics taken for two weeks. Additionally, the H-2 blockers and proton-pump inhibitors may be prescribed to reduce acid in the stomach. If you are experiencing any of these H. pylori symptoms, please seek attention from a medical professional.
