Indigestion Medication – What You Must Learn Today

Everyday, a lot of people experience indigestion. It is a very uncomfortable feeling that leaves people worried. The discomfort can be so severe that it affects the delivery of ones daily tasks. But people who suffer from indigestion should not worry because you can choose an indigestion medication from the several options available. Besides, worrying can trigger the symptoms more. If you are one of those who occasionally suffer from indigestion here are some of the medications that you can have.

There are over-the-counter antacids that you can take. You see, the uncomfortable feeling you experience is usually brought about by acid reflux. This happens when stomach acids flow back up into the esophagus. Antacids work by taming or neutralizing these acids thus the name. They normally contain magnesium. However, physicians caution you from overusing antacids. Prolonged use of antacids can lead to loss of normal stomach acidity. When this happens, your natural digestive process will be impaired.

If your problem cannot be addressed using antacids anymore or your body requires large doses, your next option might be to take H2 blockers. H2 blockers reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. But like antacids you cannot also use these blockers too much as you do not want to alter your stomach’s natural acid production permanently.

Your doctor can also prescribe an indigestion medication called proton pump inhibitor. It stops your stomach from producing stomach acids. Proton pump inhibitor is usually only given if the situation is already severe. There are also medications that are given to coat your stomach wall to prevent it from the acids.

These medications work but even before you find the need to use them, there are also things that you can do to reduce symptoms especially when your problem is still in its early stage.

First is to avoid overeating. Eating more that what is necessary could definitely lead to indigestion. Your stomach has a limit as to how much it can process at a given time. You should also avoid eating too fast. You should give time for your stomach to give signals to your brain for it to know that you are already full.

You should also avoid or cut down on tea, coffee and alcoholic drinks. Stopping smoking will also help.

These indigestion medications and preventive tips will help you depending on the stage of your indigestion problem. Just always remember that when you experience it, stop worrying as it could aggravate your problems more.
